My name is Sarah Crosby, I’m 21 and live in North Lincolnshire. I graduated from the University of Lincoln with a degree in illustration last year and I’m just starting out with my career (ideally in children’s publishing)!
When did you decide you wanted to be illustrator?
I’ve always known I wanted to do something creative as a job as I’ve always liked art but it wasn’t until I went to college that I discovered illustration was for me. My college course let me explore every aspect of art and design with fashion, graphic design, illustration… even spoon making at one point! So this really helped me work out what I wanted to do.
How long was it before illustration became your primary form of income?
I’m just starting out so it isn’t yet! But I hope I can build up a career soon until it is.
Could you describe your typical day?
Wake up, go for a walk, draw something, panic, eat, draw some more. Yes, my typical day sounds pretty boring…
What do you wish you’d know when you first started out?
I am first starting out and always on the look out for tips and advice, from anyone who wants to give me any!
What’s the best thing about being an illustrator?
The best thing about being an illustrator (apart from the process of creating something) is seeing people enjoy your work!
What’s the worst thing about being an illustrator?
The worst thing is doubting your work is any good and having days where nothing you draw seems to be going right!
If you weren’t an illustrator, what would you be?
I would want to be a gardener or garden designer, I think.
